Newly built Third Street bridge is called a symbol of unity. This bridge is not only the connection for commuters from West Dayton to downtown but its design was meant to bring people together. The bridge, designed with extensive community ideas and input, features eight topics important to the neighborhood and the Miami Valley. In addition, local artist Bing Davis gathered Adinkra African symbols, all about peace and how to live a good life, and installed them on the sidewalks, as well as one image that he designed himself. With 95% federal money, this $17 million dollar project, is now the biggest bridge job in county history. The bridge was coming apart in more ways than one so leaders decided to rebuild the entire thing rather than trying to rehabilitate it. Several community partners and the public came together to brainstorm and make this happen. The new bridge is five lanes wide, has a standard left turn lane towards the intersections, has a 10-foot walk on the north side, and then a 17-foot wide multi-use trail on the south side for people to walk and bike across. There’s also a stairway at the northwest corner of the bridge and a plaza underneath where people can find local art.
